Dr. Gumustop is a graduate of Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey where he received his medical degree. He was a visiting physician for a year in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at George Washington University Medical Center, Washington, DC. He then completed his internal medicine residency at The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown, NY and a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, Madison, WI.
Dr. Gumustop went on to pursue advanced endoscopy training in ERCP at the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He then became an instructor of medicine and Endoscopic Ultrasound trainee at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC where he completed his training.
Dr. Gumustop’s principal area of interest is clinical/research outcomes and endoscopic technology development. He currently serves on the board of St. Peter’s Surgery and Endoscopy Center, is former Chief of Gastroenterology at St. Peter’s Hospital and a member of the board of IHANY (Innovative Health Alliance of New York).
Dr. Gumustop has become proficient in performing endoscopic submucosal dissection, as well as per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM). This required extensive training across the United States and culminated with an intensive training session at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Most recently, Dr. Gumustop has completed training in endobariatrics including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), gastric bypass and gastric sleeve revisions and intragastric balloon placement.
Dr. Gumustop has been practicing gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy at Albany Gastroenterology Consultants since 2001.
In his free time, Dr. Gumustop enjoys spending time with his children, traveling, sailing, and learning to fly.
